About Me

I'm a middle-aged guy living in the South, though I was born in the North and still carry a bit of it with me. I've been a fantasy reader since I was a kid, and while my shelves have shifted toward non-fiction with age, the old loves never really leave.

The Wheel of Time is my all-time favorite series, and Rand al'Thor is my favorite character in it. Right behind it sits the Dragonlance saga, from Dragons of Autumn Twilight through Dragons of Summer Flame. I have a confession: I still haven't finished The Lord of the Rings. I'm working through it, and I suspect it will bump Dragonlance out of the number-two spot when I do.

When I'm not reading, I'm outdoors, hiking, camping, and shooting archery. Every spring I put in a vegetable garden. I follow politics closely, especially modern conservative philosophy. When it's time to unwind, I'm playing or watching Star Wars, wandering the wasteland in Fallout, getting lost in Skyrim and Oblivion, surviving the zombie apocalypse in State of Decay, or building an empire in Age of Empires.

Why This Blog?

Lately it feels like everything I love is being taken apart. This site exists for two reasons:

1. To sharpen my skills. It's my playground for practicing HTML and CSS.
2. To put my thoughts on the page. I want a place to work through what I see happening in our culture and politics.

Consider the evidence. Star Wars and Marvel have been reshaped by Disney into something I barely recognize. Amazon's adaptations of The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings left me disappointed. Star Trek, Willow, Doctor Who, and Indiana Jones are on the list too, and it keeps growing.

I don't think it's a coincidence. The same thinking that is changing our movies and TV shows runs through books, schools, politics, the news, and everyday conversation. I'll dig into that here and break it down the way I see it.
